Multi-scan is the first iPhone LiDAR solution for accurate building-scale scanning. One of the biggest challenges in mobile 3D scanning is that the device’s estimated location in space will drift over time meaning the longer you scan, the less accurate the results. Multi-scan solves this by capturing up to 10 scans in a row and merging them into a single accurate model.
Capturing a Multi-Scan on mobile
To create a multi-scan, start scanning as usual and when the progress bar is full, click the capture button again to start the next segment of a multi-scan.
You can capture up to 10 segments in a single multi-scan and it’s best if you divide the area you want to capture into roughly square sections and plan a route that covers all sections in one continuous path.
Avoid gaps by making sure you have some overlap between adjacent scan segments. When you are finished scanning, sync your multi-scan to the cloud and log into SiteScape on desktop to complete the merging process.
Merging a Multi-Scan on the web
From the web, open your multi-scan to start the merging flow. First, line up the walls of the first scan segment so they are parallel to the grid, and click "Continue" to add the next scan segment. You can readjust a previous segment anytime by clicking “Edit.”
Merging Toolbar
You can use the move and rotate tools by selecting them from the toolbar and clicking and dragging on the points a scan. With the move tool selected you can toggle to rotate by holding shift or by using the right mouse button. Pan your view by clicking and dragging anywhere outside the active scan. If you pan too far and get lost you can click the re-center icon in the toolbar to reset your view.
Tips for aligning
When adjusting the alignment of scans, the main thing to focus on is making sure that all walls are straight and parallel across scan segments. The grid can be a helpful reference for keeping things straight and you can use the outline tool to automatically highlight walls so they are easier to see.
Completing the merging process
Once all segments have been aligned click merge now to start the merging process. The merged scan will show up in your scan list but the process can take several minutes or more so look out for an email notification when your merged scan is ready.
